Christmas walk through the old towns of cities in the Opole province and the Olomouc region

Winter is the time when the old towns of cities transform into magical scenes straight out of a fairy tale. Christmas illuminations light up the streets, and the smell of mulled wine, gingerbread and local delicacies fills the air at the markets. In the Opole Voivodeship and the Olomouc Region, both on the Polish and Czech sides of the border, unique places full of history, architecture and Christmas atmosphere await us. Let’s set off on a Christmas walk through the most beautiful old towns of the region!

Olomouc
Olomouc, one of the most beautiful cities in Central Europe, delights at any time of year, but in winter it takes on a special charm. The Upper Square, the heart of the city, is decorated with the Holy Trinity Column – a UNESCO monument. Right next to it is the Gothic-Renaissance town hall with a unique astronomical clock. The town hall tower offers a panoramic view of the city, whose history dates back to the times of the Moravian Přemyslids.

Olomouc is also home to beautiful parks that surround the historic center. Walking around the city, you can visit the Information Center, from where you can easily plan your next sightseeing trip. Christmas markets fill the city with the aroma of local specialties.

Šumperk
Šumperk, known as “Little Vienna”, is a city with a rich history and unique architecture. The town hall tower is a must-see – from its top there is a view of the majestic peaks of the Jeseníky Mountains, including Praděd and Petrovy kameny. The elevator makes it easy to climb the tower, and on the viewing terrace you can use binoculars to admire the landscape even better.

A walk through the city centre takes us back to the times when Šumperk was an industrial and cultural centre. Christmas illuminations illuminate the historic tenement houses and squares, giving the city a unique Christmas atmosphere.

Paczków
Paczków, called the “Polish Carcassonne”, delights with its picturesque market square surrounded by 17th and 18th century tenement houses. The town hall with a 45-metre tower is a true gem of Renaissance architecture. From the viewing terrace you can admire the panorama of the city and the Eastern Sudetes.

Brzeg
Brzeg is a city famous for its Renaissance town hall – one of the most beautiful buildings of this type in Poland. The Great Ceiling Hall and the Councillors’ Hall are impressive in their decoration, and the clock tower offers a wonderful view of the city. Walking around the market square, it is also worth visiting the baroque tenement houses on Jabłkowa Street.

Christmas illuminations add a unique charm to the market square, and the local fair attracts visitors with the aroma of roasted chestnuts and traditional gingerbread.

Nysa
Nysa, located at the confluence of two rivers, has been called the “pearl of Silesian architecture” for centuries. The town hall tower, rebuilt in 2008, offers one of the best viewpoints in the region. The panorama of the city and the Eastern Sudetes is breathtaking.

The Nysa Market Square is filled with unique decorations during the holiday season. Walking around, you can admire historic tenement houses, the basilica and other evidence of the city’s rich history.

Głubczyce
The Głubczyce Town Hall is an example of reconstruction with respect for historical architecture. Its observation tower and museum are attractions that attract tourists. In the city centre, you will also find preserved city walls and towers from the 13th century.

Opole
The Opole Town Hall, modeled on the Florentine Palazzo Vecchio, is the heart of the city. Its observation tower allows you to admire the panorama, including numerous historic churches. During the Christmas period, Opole delights with the illuminations that illuminate the old town.
