Travels in Time and Space

As we travel the routes of the historic railroad, we come across pearls of engineering heritage!

We invite you to travel through time and space to discover the fascinating history of the Ferdinand Northern Track Viaducts in Bohemia (Hranice). These impressive structures, built in the 1870s, are not only a testament to the technical genius of bygone eras, but also serve as a reminder of the concerted effort that went into developing communications and integrating communities.

In 1836, construction began on Emperor Ferdinand’s Northern Railway, which would connect Vienna with Galicia, creating a remarkable link between the empire’s capital and its northeastern territories. Since then, this single-track railroad has been not only a travel route, but also a thread that intertwined diverse cultures, trade and human destinies.

But this is just the beginning! It wasn’t until the following decades, after years of work and effort, that more viaducts were built, completing the vision of connectivity and enabling the development of rail routes. And finally, during World War I, Italian prisoners of war were conscripted to work on the construction of the third track. This is a remarkable combination of past and present, reflecting not only engineering achievements, but also history and cultural heritage.

Reaching a total length of 430 meters, the viaducts in Hranice are not only symbols of technical genius, but also a testament to the power of community and human labor that enabled the development of communication and exchange between people.
