The Głubczyce Town Hall

The Głubczyce Town Hall, located at Rynek 7, is a building with an incredibly rich history and an equally fascinating present. Although it is currently a 21st-century reconstruction, its roots date back to the 13th century, when the first merchant house was built on this site. Over the centuries, the building has undergone many reconstructions, reflecting changing architectural styles and the needs of its residents.

From the 13th century to the Renaissance – the development of the town hall

Originally, the town hall served a commercial function. In the second half of the 16th century, the building was rebuilt in the Renaissance style. During this period, it gained a characteristic richly decorated attic, and a tower with a clock made in Wrocław was built next to it. The ground floor housed court chambers, municipal cash registers and commercial spaces, while the first floor served administrative functions – it housed the Municipal and Village Court.

Fires, reconstructions and the modern era

In the 17th century, the town hall was seriously damaged by fire, but it was quickly rebuilt, adding, among other things, sgraffito decorations on the tower. In the 19th century, the building gained a neo-Gothic character thanks to the design of the famous Wrocław architect Karl Lüdecke. The last changes were introduced in the 1930s, adapting the interiors to the needs of the Savings Bank.

Destruction during the war and reconstruction

In 1945, the town hall burned down, and its ruins were gradually dismantled over the years. Only a fragment of the tower and the ground floor brickwork survived to the present day. It was not until 2008 that the decision was made to rebuild the building, which today combines modernity with historical elements.

The town hall today – a museum, a viewing point and a meeting place

Currently, the building houses the Museum of the Głubczyce Region, a library and a viewing point in the tower, from which you can admire the panorama of the city. The merchant tenement houses adjacent to the town hall were rebuilt and adapted into apartments and service premises.
